Is it a Sign or Am I Just Grieving? Thoughts from a Therapist-Medium on After-Death Communication from our Loved Ones

A peaceful representation of after death communication trauma healing and signs from a deceased loved one for a woman in grief.

When you’re navigating the profound emptiness of losing a spouse, partner, child, animal, or close loved one, the world can feel incredibly dark. But then, something unexplainable happens. You feel a sudden, warm presence in an empty room. A cardinal lands on your windowsill and stares directly into your eyes. Your loved one’s favorite song plays on the radio even though you rarely hear it played any more. you catch a fleeting scent of their familiar cologne.

In the quiet hours, a painful, isolating question often slips in: Am I losing my mind, or is this really a sign?

Tragically, many of us experience these profound moments but lock them away in secret. We are scared to tell our friends, family, or a traditional mental health professional for fear of being judged, dismissed, or labeled as delusional. As a trained and experienced trauma counselor and evidential psychic medium, I want you to take a deep, grounding breath: you are not losing your mind, and you are not alone. ‍ ‍

To understand these moments, it helps to look at how signs from the afterlife actually work. When our loved ones pass on, they shed their physical bodies, but their conscious identity transitions into a state of pure, high-vibrational energy. Because they no longer have a physical voice, they communicate by interacting with energetic currents already flowing around us. They can subtly influence electronic frequencies-causing a light to flicker or a specific song to cue on your playlist-or they can briefly direct the behavior of small animals, like a butterfly or a bird, to catch your attention. They use whatever is available in your immediate environment to send a sudden jolt of meaningful synchronicity, designed to let your soul know they are still right here. (Ask me about the time my grandparents conspired to knock a cell phone camera off a mantle just at the time it was taking a picture of all of us kids and grandkids)!

In my practice, I bridge the gap between psychological safety and the soul. From a clinical perspective, your nervous system is processing deep shock over your loss. From a spiritual perspective, love does not end when the physical body ceases to exist. These encounters are a beautiful, natural part of after-death communication trauma healing.

True, holistic healing happens when we honor both your psychological grief and your continuing spiritual experiences. You do not have to compartmentalize your life. You deserve a sacred, entirely non-judgmental space to validate the energetic presence you feel, decode the signs surrounding you, and gently integrate this ongoing spiritual connection into your healing journey. Your love didn’t end at the threshold of physical loss, and neither does your story. So, look for those signs and trust yourself and your loved ones. (You can even ask them to do something specific…just give them time to learn!)
